Our aim is to proclaim that true comfort which a living faith in the Lord Jesus Christ alone can bring. This means possessing an experiential knowledge of the truth contained in Lord’s Day 1 of the Heidelberg Catechism. It is truly well with your soul, if you, in answer to the question, “What is your only comfort in life and in death?” from the heart can answer:
That I, with body and soul, both in life and in death, am not my own, but belong to my faithful Saviour Jesus Christ, who with His precious blood has fully satisfied for all my sins, and redeemed me from all the power of the devil; and so preserves me that without the will of my Father in heaven not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, that all things must work together for my salvation. Wherefore, by His Holy Spirit, He also assures me of eternal life, and makes me heartily willing and ready from now on to live unto Him.
We firmly believe that this only comfort which Christ gives is received by means of the faithful proclamation and application of God’s word, both expositionally and experientially [Rom.10:14-15; 1Cor.1:21-22]. The word of God, the Bible, is inspired of God from beginning to end and is a living word, able to effect the new birth [1Pet.1:22-25].
The final authority in the Reformed faith is the Bible. This alone governs all life and practice [2Tim.3:16]. Through the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit we come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and Him crucified for us, but The Holy Spirit also illuminates for us the truth of God’s word, as we daily seek to apply the truths of Scripture to our lives. This is the core and wellspring of Reformed piety.
Our understanding of the leading truths of Scripture are summarised and confessed in three key Reformed documents [The Three Forms of Unity]: the Belgic Confession, Heidelberg Catechism, and Canons of Dort. We also highly regard the Westminster standards of faith and practice.
We sincerely trust that the Bible, with its message of reconciliation between God and man through faith in Christ, is the only answer to the problems of this world. Sin separates us from God and our fellow man and Christ alone can break down these walls of separation bringing peace with God and with our fellow man [Eph.2:14 – 18]
We ardently hold to the essential doctrines of the Reformed faith [Five Solas and the Five Points of Calvinism], but equally ardently believe that these doctrines, through the preaching of the word and through the instruction of God’s people, be applied to the heart! Failure to do this ends in a formal and intellectual Christianity which does more harm than good to the cause of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Good doctrine is what governs good practice and we fear that the rampant antinomianism that we witness in the “Christian church” these days is the result of failing to recognise this essential principle.
